LG Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Drive - BH16NS55 � 25/03/2025

 

I purchased an LG BH16NS55 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Drive for $89 AUD from

I have been very happy with it and it has led me to start backing up files, videos and photos on Blu-Ray discs.

The benefit of using a Bluray disc or DVD (optical media) over something like a USB or Hard Drive is that as long as the disc is taken care of and stored in an appropriate environment, it will last much longer than a USB or HDD, which deteriorate by themselves regardless of the condition they are stored in.

The drive is inside a 3D-printed enclosure.

I have the drive connected to a Toshiba laptop next to it via eSATA.(data only). The drive gets power from a molex to sata power adapter (the molex power is from a pc running next to it - you cannot see the PC in the image.)

The Bluray discs that I use were ordered from Japan (via Amazon) are Verbatim brand in a 100 bulk pack. This was because it was the best deal I could find. The delivery was also free with prime. They have worked great with no issues so far.

At the time of writing it is $63.24 AUD for the 100 pack of 25GB discs.

LG Blu-Ray Writer BH16NS55 Specs:

Make sure that when burning you don't select a speed that's higher than what the disc supports. For example, even if the Bly-Ray drive supports burning DVD's at 16x, if the disc says 1-8x do not use a speed higher than 8x. In fact, to ensure maximum longevity, it is recommended to not use a speed higher than half of the rated speed on the disc.
